CBD for Sleep: Tinctures, Softgels & Gummies in 2026

If you’re scrolling at 2am looking for a hemp product that actually helps you stay asleep, you’re in the right place. Below is the practical, research-backed guide to using CBD + CBN + Δ9 for sleep — what each cannabinoid does, what dose actually works, how to pick between a tincture, softgel, or gummy, and which of our products to start with.

How hemp cannabinoids work for sleep

There are three cannabinoids that show up consistently in the sleep research: CBD, CBN, and low-dose Δ9 THC. Each addresses a different piece of the sleep puzzle.

CBD (cannabidiol) is the most-studied. Its effect on sleep is indirect — it works primarily by easing the everyday stress that can keep people awake in the first place. CBD is your “stop the mental loops” cannabinoid.

CBN (cannabinol) is the sleep-specific cannabinoid. For years it was dismissed as a degradation byproduct of aged THC; recent research has reframed it. In a 2023 placebo-controlled study of 293 adults, 20 mg of CBN taken nightly for a week reduced nighttime wake-ups and overall sleep disturbance compared with placebo, without more next-day tiredness (Bonn-Miller et al., 2023, Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology; the authors were employees of cannabis companies Canopy Growth and Wana Brands). It didn’t speed up falling asleep, and adding CBD didn’t improve the result, so pairing CBN with CBD is our formulation choice rather than a proven combination.

Low-dose Δ9 THC adds a sedative effect that neither CBD nor CBN provides on its own. At our 5mg or 10mg gummy doses it’s noticeable but well below most people’s threshold for “feeling impaired”; at our microdose tier (2mg Δ9 per gummy) it’s sub-perceptual but still contributes meaningfully to sleep onset via the microdose entourage effect. Hemp-derived Δ9 is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill at <0.3% by dry weight (through December 10, 2026 — see our federal hemp law guide).

The reason we put all three in our Sleep products is that they each address a different sleep problem: CBD for racing thoughts, CBN for nighttime awakenings, Δ9 for onset. Stacking them gets you closer to architecturally normal sleep than any single cannabinoid alone.

How CBN compares to melatonin

If you’ve been using melatonin gummies and they stopped working — or you’re waking up groggy — there’s a structural reason for that. Melatonin shifts your circadian rhythm; it tells your brain it’s nighttime. That works the first few nights, then your body adapts. Melatonin doesn’t address WHY you can’t stay asleep; it just nudges the clock.

CBN is different. It doesn’t move the clock — it appears to interact with the endocannabinoid system to support sleep maintenance, particularly reducing 2–4am wake-ups. In the largest placebo-controlled CBN sleep study, 20 mg of CBN reduced nighttime wake-ups but didn’t shorten the time it took to fall asleep (Bonn-Miller et al., 2023, Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology).

In practical terms: if you fall asleep fine but wake at 3am, CBN is more useful than melatonin. If you can’t fall asleep at all, melatonin and Δ9 are both contenders. If your sleep is consistently poor, our CBN + CBD + Δ9 formulas address all three pieces at once.

How much CBN do you actually need for sleep?

This is where most “sleep gummies” on the market quietly fail. Look at the cannabinoid panel on the back of a Walmart or supplement-store sleep gummy and you’ll typically find 2–5mg of CBN per gummy. 20 mg of CBN is the nightly amount used in the largest placebo-controlled CBN sleep study so far (Bonn-Miller et al., 2023, Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology).

We dose 20mg of CBN per gummy in both our 5mg and 10mg Δ9 Sleep variants — at the upper end of the studied range, not a trace amount you have to take 6 of to feel anything.

For tinctures and softgels, the CBN dose scales by potency tier — see the product table below.

Pick your format

Hemp products for sleep come in four main formats. Each has trade-offs:

Format Onset Duration Best for Caveats
Tincture (sublingual) 15–30 min 4–6 hrs Precise dosing, daily ritual, fast onset Tropical Orange flavor (some people love, some don’t)
Soft gel capsule 45–90 min 6–8 hrs Discreet, travel, no taste, precise dose Contains gelatin (not plant-based)
Δ9 + CBN gummy 45–90 min 6–8 hrs The most effective format for sustained sleep — and the highest active loading Includes Δ9 THC (drug test positive)
Microdose Δ9 gummy 45–90 min 6–8 hrs Gentlest Δ9 effect — 2mg microdose below perception threshold + full CBN Still THC-positive on drug tests with daily use

Why the gummy carries more active cannabinoids: a single tincture dropper or softgel capsule physically holds about 1ml of material. A gummy holds 3–4 grams. That extra volume lets us load more THC, CBD, and CBN into a single serving without compromising stability or taste — which is why our Sleep gummies hit a full 20mg CBN per piece while the tinctures top out at 15mg in the Heavy variant. If you want maximum actives per serving, gummies win on physics.

The honest rec: if you want the gentlest introduction, start with our Sleep Microdose Gummy (2mg Δ9 + 10mg CBN + 67mg CBD — sub-perceptual THC, full CBN effect). If you want more Δ9 layered with the CBN, step up to the 5mg variant. If you want precise dosing or you’re stacking with other products, the tincture is the right pick. For drug-tested users, there’s no ingestible Sleep option — even the microdose accumulates THC metabolites with daily use. Consider the Muscle + Joint Salve for non-sleep topical recovery.

Our Sleep products

Δ9 + CBN gummies (most effective for sustained sleep)

5mg Sleep Gummy (Cherry Lemon) — 5mg Δ9, 40mg CBD, 20mg CBN per gummy. Available in 1, 10, or 30-count jars. Availability varies by state — see our state guide.

10mg Sleep Gummy (Blackberry) — 10mg Δ9, 100mg CBD, 20mg CBN per gummy. Available in 10 or 25-count jars. For experienced users in non-Utah states.

Sleep Microdose Gummy (Orange Raspberry, 2mg Δ9 microdose tier)

Sleep Microdose Gummy — 2mg Δ9 microdose + 10mg CBN + 67mg CBD per gummy. The gentlest of our three Sleep gummies — Δ9 below perception threshold for a subtle entourage effect, full CBN at research-supported sleep doses. Not for drug-tested users (still THC-positive with daily use). Available in 1ct, 10ct, and 25ct.

Sleep tinctures (precise dosing, sublingual onset)

Light Sleep Tincture (1oz) — 33mg CBD + 5mg CBN per dropper. Entry-level potency for first-time users or gentler nightly use.

Medium Sleep Tincture (1oz) — 67mg CBD + 10mg CBN per dropper. The sweet spot for most adults.

Heavy Sleep Tincture (1oz) — 94mg CBD + 15mg CBN per dropper. Our highest potency, for experienced users.

Sleep Sample Pack (9-vial Starter Kit) — three single-dose 1ml vials each of Light, Medium, and Heavy in Tropical Orange. Each vial = one dose. Find your right potency tier by trying all three across a few nights — because everybody is different. The cleanest way to start before committing to a 1oz bottle.

Sleep soft gel capsules (precise dosing, no taste)

Light / Medium / Heavy Sleep Soft Gels (100ct) — same cannabinoid profile as the tinctures, in a swallowable capsule format. Note: contains gelatin.

Sleep starter kit

The Sample Pack above IS the starter kit — 9 single-dose vials of Light/Medium/Heavy tincture so you can find your potency tier before committing to a 1oz bottle. We don’t offer a separate combo bundle because most customers want to know which strength works for them first; once you’ve found it, the matching 1oz bottle becomes your daily go-to.

How to use your Sleep product

Whatever format you pick, the same dosing rules apply:

Take 45–90 minutes before you want to be asleep. Edibles onset slowly. Taking a gummy as you get into bed means you’ll be staring at the ceiling when it kicks in.

Take with a small amount of fat (handful of nuts, square of dark chocolate, glass of whole milk). Cannabinoids are fat-soluble — absorption is more consistent with food.

Start with the lower dose if you’ve never used CBN or hemp-derived Δ9. ½gummy or ½dropper for the first 2–3 nights. Tolerance to CBN is low, but the most common dosing mistake is taking too much on the first night and concluding “it didn’t work” the next morning because you slept through your alarm.

Be consistent for 7–10 nights before evaluating. CBN’s effects on sleep architecture appear to build with consistent nightly use rather than work as a hit-once intervention.

See our full dosing guide for stacking with our base Δ9 gummy (daytime), our Muscle + Joint gummy (recovery), or the Entourage Booster.

A note about the 2026 federal hemp law changes

Federal hemp law is changing in late 2026 under Public Law 119-37 Section 781. Effective November 12, 2026, the law excludes cannabinoids not naturally produced by the hemp plant (such as THC-O) from the federal definition of hemp; most other changes, including the 0.4 mg per-container cap, take effect December 11, 2026. Our Muscle + Joint Salve is likely the most resilient product across this change; CBD isolate / 0-THC alternatives for ingested formats are in development. Read our full hemp law guide → for what’s changing and what your options are.

Is this legal in my state?

Hemp-derived Δ9 THC is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill at ≤0.3% THC by dry weight. Both our 5mg and 10mg Δ9 Sleep gummies meet that threshold. State laws vary:

  • Other states: see Utah, Texas, California, or the full state-by-state map.
  • Drug-tested users: Contains up to 0.3% Delta 9 THC; we don’t recommend use if you are drug tested. CBD isolate Sleep options are in development.

CBD, CBN, and CBG (the other active cannabinoids in our Sleep formulas) are not federally scheduled and are broadly legal across all 50 states.

Why Gold Naturals

  • Formulated by advisors trained in the tradition of Dr. Raphael Mechoulam whose work covers CBD pharmacology and immune-system interactions. our formulation team trained in the orbit of Dr. Raphael Mechoulam — the Israeli biochemist who isolated THC in 1964 and proposed the entourage effect in 1998 with Ben-Shabat. Mechoulam, who passed in March 2023, is widely considered the father of cannabinoid science. Every cannabinoid ratio in our products comes out of that research lineage, not a marketing brief.
  • Clinically meaningful 20mg CBN dose in our gummies — research-supported, while most competitors dose 2–5mg
  • Made in Utah from American-grown hemp under the Utah Hemp Manufacturer Program — one of the most rigorous state regimes in the country
  • CO2-extracted — cleanest extraction method, no residual ethanol or hydrocarbons
  • UDAF + APRC lab tested — two independent Utah-program labs verify every batch (batch numbers printed on every jar)
  • Plant-based + gluten-free + non-GMO (gummies; softgels contain gelatin)

What customers are saying

“Best product I’ve found to help with post-menopausal sleep issues. I’m sleeping like I did 30 years ago!”
— Lysne C., verified buyer (★★★★★)

“These are the best to take if you have a hard time getting to sleep, or if you wake up in the middle of the night and have a hard time going back to sleep. I highly recommend this product!”
— Danielle W., verified buyer (★★★★★)

“Great product!”
— Deborah S., verified buyer (★★★★★)

“It works but it left me with a little sluggishness for a while.”
— John C., verified buyer (★★★★☆)

We include the 4-star review because we want you to set realistic expectations. Most customers report waking refreshed, but a small percentage do feel residual mellowness the first 30–60 minutes after waking — typically resolved by halving the dose or shifting your timing earlier in the evening.

Current aggregate: 4.8 stars across 9 verified-buyer reviews. See all reviews on the 10mg Sleep gummy product page.

Frequently asked questions

Does CBN actually help you sleep?

Early research says it may help you stay asleep. In a 2023 placebo-controlled study of 293 adults, 20 mg of CBN nightly reduced nighttime wake-ups and overall sleep disturbance compared with placebo, without more next-day tiredness (Bonn-Miller et al., 2023, Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology; the authors were employees of Canopy Growth and Wana Brands). It didn’t speed up falling asleep, and adding CBD didn’t improve the result. We pair CBN with CBD as a formulation choice.

How much CBN should I take for sleep?

There’s no established CBN dose. A common starting range is 10–20mg per night, and the largest placebo-controlled CBN sleep study used 20 mg nightly. Most over-the-counter “sleep gummies” dose CBN at 2–5mg. Our Sleep gummies contain 20mg of CBN per gummy.

What’s the difference between CBN and melatonin for sleep?

They work differently, and you don’t need to take CBN every night. Melatonin is a hormone — your body produces it naturally — and taking it nightly can suppress your own production and shift your circadian rhythm in ways researchers are still studying. CBN doesn’t mimic a hormone and doesn’t move your clock; it works through receptors in your body that help regulate calm, pain, and sleep — and in the largest placebo-controlled study it reduced nighttime wake-ups but didn’t shorten the time it took to fall asleep. For most customers, CBN works best as an as-needed tool (travel, stress weeks, a streak of bad nights) rather than a nightly habit.

Will hemp-derived Δ9 Sleep products show up on a drug test?

Yes. All three of our Sleep gummy tiers contain Δ9 — even the microdose at 2mg accumulates THC metabolites with daily use enough to trigger standard drug screens. CBD isolate Sleep options are in development; in the meantime, employment-tested users should not use any of our Sleep products daily.

Will I be drowsy in the morning?

Most customers report waking refreshed rather than groggy. Effects of one gummy or one dropper generally subside within 6–8 hours.

Can I take a Sleep product every night?

You can, but you usually don’t need to. CBN works well as an as-needed tool — most customers reach for it during travel, stress weeks, or stretches of poor sleep rather than nightly. There’s no physical dependency on CBN or low-dose Δ9. Some people prefer a plant-based option to add to their nightly routine.

Tincture, softgel, or gummy — which should I start with?

If you want the gentlest introduction, start with the Microdose gummy (2mg Δ9 + 10mg CBN). If you tolerate more Δ9 and want a stronger effect, step up to the 5mg Δ9 + 20mg CBN gummy. If you want precise dosing or you’re stacking with other hemp products, choose the tincture. If you want a discreet, taste-free format and you’re okay with gelatin, the softgel is right. If you are drug tested, we don’t recommend any product in our Sleep line — even the microdose contains Delta 9 THC.

What’s the difference between the 5mg and 10mg Δ9 Sleep gummies?

Both deliver a full 20mg of CBN per gummy. The 5mg has 5mg of Δ9 and 40mg of CBD. The 10mg has 10mg of Δ9 and 100mg of CBD (for experienced users in non-restricted states). Same CBN dose, different THC and CBD levels.

Can I take CBN with other sleep medications?

We don’t recommend stacking with prescription sleep medications without consulting your doctor. CBN itself has a benign safety profile in the research to date, but interactions with prescription sedatives are not well-studied. CBN is fine to use alongside magnesium, ashwagandha, or other supplements.
