CBG (Cannabigerol): What It Is and How We Use It for Pain and Recovery

By Jake Jones, CEO, Gold Naturals · Updated October 2026

What is CBG?

CBG (cannabigerol) is a cannabinoid from hemp. It's called the 'mother cannabinoid' because its acid form, CBGA, is what the plant converts into THC, CBD and CBC. Mature hemp contains only small amounts of CBG, so high-dose CBG products are less common. Early research is studying CBG for pain and inflammation.

Why it's called the 'mother cannabinoid'

All major cannabinoids begin as CBGA (cannabigerolic acid). Hemp enzymes convert CBGA into THCA, CBDA, and CBCA — the acidic precursors to THC, CBD, and CBC. By harvest, these conversions are largely complete and very little CBG remains in the plant. That is why meaningful-dose CBG products are harder to find and typically cost more than comparable CBD products.

Does CBG get you high?

CBG isn't known to cause a high. It binds only weakly to the CB1 receptor responsible for THC's effects. In a 2024 double-blind study of 34 healthy adults, a single 20 mg dose showed no evidence of subjective drug effects or impairment (Cuttler et al., 2024; PMID 39003387; research funding from Huxley Health, Healer, and others). Our current full-spectrum products also contain up to 0.3% Delta 9 THC — check each label.

Is CBG good for pain and inflammation? What research shows

Early research is promising but limited. Lab and animal studies show anti-inflammatory activity. A small 2023 placebo-controlled pilot found a CBG + CBD drink reduced muscle soreness 72 hours after exercise. No large human trials have tested CBG for pain specifically. Larger trials are needed.

Lab and animal research

In lab and animal research (not human trials), a 2026 study published in Pharmaceuticals found that CBG reduced pro-inflammatory activity in human immune cells: "Ex vivo experiments demonstrated that CBG hampered the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines from human neutrophils in a dose-dependent manner (TNF-α and IL-6 by 68% and 72%, respectively)" (Aswad et al., 2026, Pharmaceuticals; PMID 42075816; funded by Raphael Pharmaceutical Inc.; one author holds a provisional patent). The authors state: "These findings are preclinical and require further validation before therapeutic positioning."

The 2023 DOMS pilot

A small placebo-controlled pilot (N=40) published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2023 (PMID 37947792) found a CBG + CBD drink reduced muscle soreness at 72 hours after exercise. The researchers used 50 mg CBG + 35 mg CBD. This was a small pilot trial; larger trials are needed.

The only human CBG trial (Cuttler 2024)

The only published double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial of CBG to date was not a pain or inflammation study. Cuttler et al., 2024 (PMID 39003387) gave 34 healthy adults a single 20 mg dose of hemp-derived CBG and measured subjective drug effects and impairment. Result: "There was no evidence of subjective drug effects or impairment." Compared with placebo, participants also reported less stress at the first check-in, and verbal memory improved. Disclosure: Research funding and/or investigator ties to Huxley Health, Healer, CReDO Science, Canopy Growth, and FSD Pharma.

What we don't know yet

No human trial has tested CBG specifically for pain or inflammation. The lab and survey findings are early; larger human trials are still needed.

How much CBG should I take?

There's no official CBG dose. The only human trial used 20 mg as a single dose. A 2026 survey of 239 CBG users (Lutz et al., 2026; PMID 42741890) found people typically reported taking 10–12 mg, with effects felt within 15–60 minutes and lasting 4–6 hours. Pain and recovery were among the top reasons users reported taking CBG. Many people start with half a gummy and adjust over a week. Talk with your doctor if you take other medications.

Gummies, tincture, softgels or salve: which CBG format?

Gummies and softgels

Gummies and softgels deliver CBG systemically. Effects typically take 45–90 minutes to onset, making them well-suited for consistent daily use.

Tincture

Tinctures taken sublingually (held under the tongue for about 60 seconds) typically show effects in 15–30 minutes. Our Muscle + Joint Tincture is available in three potency tiers: 10 mg, 17 mg, and 25 mg CBG per mL.

Salve

Salve is applied directly to skin where you need it. Research on the skin's endocannabinoid system is still early. A 2009 review found: "Recent studies have intriguingly suggested the existence of a functional ECS in the skin and implicated it in various biological processes" (Bíró et al., 2009; PMID 19608284). The same review noted: "It seems that the main physiological function of the cutaneous ECS is to constitutively control the proper and well-balanced proliferation, differentiation and survival, as well as immune competence and/or tolerance, of skin cells."

A 20-person vehicle-controlled human study of a 0.1% CBG serum on irritated skin found: "CBG serum showed statistically significant improvement above placebo for transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and reduction in the appearance of redness" (Perez et al., 2022; PMID 35056807; authors are employees of Signum Biosciences and Willow Biosciences and hold stock). These were cosmetic skin outcomes, not pain or inflammation endpoints.

Lab research on human skin shows CBD absorbs into the skin (Junaid et al., 2022; PMID 35124116). Our salve is formulated for topical use.

Why high-potency CBG matters

The only published human CBG trial used a single 20 mg dose. Many CBG products on the market contain 5–17 mg per serving. Our Muscle + Joint Gummy delivers 17 mg CBG per gummy. Our Muscle + Joint Tincture is available at 10, 17, or 25 mg CBG per mL depending on the tier.

Contains up to 0.3% Delta 9 THC; we don't recommend use if you are drug tested.

What changes on December 11

Federal hemp law changes on December 11, 2026. Under P.L. 119-37 §781, hemp products will be limited to 0.4 mg total THC per container. Our current Muscle + Joint formulas are full-spectrum and contain up to 0.3% Δ9 THC by dry weight. We are reformulating our CBG line to meet the new limit — when our new formulas are ready, we will update this page.

Early findings are promising; larger human trials are needed. For a detailed comparison, see our CBG vs CBD for pain guide.

Is CBG anti-inflammatory?

In lab and animal research (not human trials), CBG showed anti-inflammatory activity, including reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines by 68–72% in human immune cells in a lab setting (Aswad et al., 2026, Pharmaceuticals; funded by Raphael Pharmaceutical Inc.). These are preclinical findings; human trial data is still needed.

How much CBG should I take?

There's no official CBG dose. The only human trial used 20 mg as a single dose. Is CBG better than CBD?

There's no direct head-to-head human trial. CBG and CBD work through different pathways. Our Muscle + Joint formulas pair them. For a detailed comparison, see our CBG vs CBD for pain guide.

Can I take CBG and CBD together?

Yes. Our Muscle + Joint formulas combine both cannabinoids. No human trial has directly compared the combination vs each alone for muscle or joint recovery.

Is CBG or CBN better for pain?

They have different profiles: CBG has early anti-inflammatory lab evidence; CBN has sleep trial data. If pain disrupts your sleep, pairing them may make sense. No head-to-head human trial exists. See our CBN for sleep guide.

Is CBG legal?

Hemp-derived CBG is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill if Δ9 THC is below 0.3% by dry weight. Our products meet that standard. Federal rules change on December 11, 2026 (P.L. 119-37 §781). State rules vary. This is legal information, not legal advice. See our hemp law change guide.

Will CBG show up on a drug test?

Standard drug tests look for THC metabolites, not CBG. However, our current CBG products are full spectrum. Contains up to 0.3% Delta 9 THC; we don't recommend use if you are drug tested.
