What Is CBN? The Cannabinoid That Supports Our Sleep Heavy Formula
Jake JonesIf you've heard about CBD, you probably haven't heard much about CBN. Yet CBN is one of the most-talked-about cannabinoids in the sleep wellness category — and it's the supporting cannabinoid in our Sleep Heavy tincture. Here's what CBN actually is, what the research says (and doesn't say), and how it differs from CBD.
What Is CBN?
CBN, or cannabinol, is a minor cannabinoid found in the hemp plant. Unlike CBD — which the plant produces directly — CBN forms over time as THC oxidizes. In other words, aged hemp naturally develops higher CBN content than fresh hemp.
CBN is non-intoxicating. It doesn't produce a "high" the way THC does. It's federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill when derived from hemp containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC.
How CBN Differs from CBD
| Property | CBD | CBN |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Produced directly by hemp plant | Forms from THC oxidation over time |
| Abundance in hemp | Major cannabinoid | Minor cannabinoid (typically < 1%) |
| Intoxicating? | No | No |
| Most-discussed use | Stress, recovery, general wellness | Sleep wellness |
| Research base | Larger; FDA-approved drug exists | Smaller; emerging |
| Typical retail price | $0.03 - $0.07 / mg | $0.10 - $0.30 / mg |
Why CBN Is More Expensive
Two reasons. First, the hemp plant produces very little CBN directly — most CBN on the market is made by converting CBD or THC in a controlled lab process. That extra step costs money. Second, the supply chain is smaller. CBN-specific cultivation, extraction, and testing are more specialized than CBD.
That's why a CBN-forward sleep tincture typically costs more than a plain CBD tincture at the same volume.
What the Research Actually Says
CBN research is in early stages. Most published studies are preclinical (cell or animal studies), with limited human trials. Reported areas of interest include sleep regulation, appetite, and mild relaxation — but it's important to be clear: the FDA has not approved CBN to treat any condition, and we don't make medical claims about it.
Anecdotally, customers who switch from a CBD-only sleep formula to a CBD + CBN formula often report feeling the difference. That's consistent with the "entourage effect" hypothesis, which suggests cannabinoids work synergistically rather than in isolation. Whether that's true for CBN specifically is still being studied.
How Gold Naturals Uses CBN
Our Sleep Heavy tincture contains 15 mg of CBN per mL alongside 94 mg of CBD per mL — roughly a 6:1 CBD to CBN ratio. The CBN is included as a supporting cannabinoid for the sleep-focused formula. Our Stress and Muscle + Joint tinctures don't contain meaningful CBN since the goal of those formulas is different.
Is CBN Right for You?
If you're using a CBD-only product for sleep and finding it isn't quite hitting the target, trying a CBD + CBN formula is a logical next step. If your sleep is fine but you're addressing stress or recovery, plain CBD or a CBG-supported formula is probably a better match.
Want to test it without committing? The Sleep Starter Kit at $20.99 includes the same CBD + CBN formula in a small-format bottle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is CBN legal?
Yes, CBN is federally legal in the U.S. when derived from hemp containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC, per the 2018 Farm Bill. State laws vary; check your local regulations.
Will CBN make me high?
No. CBN is non-intoxicating. It does not produce the psychoactive effects of THC.
Will CBN show up on a drug test?
Standard drug tests look for THC metabolites, not CBN directly. However, full-spectrum hemp products contain trace amounts of THC. If drug testing is a concern, choose a broad-spectrum or isolate-based product and review the Certificate of Analysis.
How much CBN should I take?
There's no established "correct" CBN dose. Most CBN-forward sleep formulas deliver 2 to 15 mg CBN per serving. Start at the lower end and adjust based on your response.
